Old consumer units do not protect you from electric shocks. All modern consumer units must have RCD protection to eliminate the chances of electrocution.
In the event of a fault, RCDs disconnect the supply with in a set time to prevent the user from having an electric shock.
A lot of fires are started in the consumer unit , normally from loose connections, cable deterioration or shoddy electrical work.Old fuse boards are made of plastic material or enclosed in a combustible casing where the fire can easily spread.
Modern consumer units can contain fires for a set time and reduces the spread of fire allowing the occupiers time to react.
Changing a consumer unit must be notified through building control and certified by a registered Electrician.
Only Part P registered Electricians can carry out electrical work in a domestic dwelling.

“Excellent work, extremely courteous and would recommend to anybody. Arrived at the perfect time for what was a minor job but treated me as if I was the most important customer, also refused to let me sweep up and left the work area immaculate. A genuine credit to his profession.”
Made wires safe, Checkatrade Customer
“We had problems with the bathroom lights since they were installed, suspect overheating. Tried to replace myself but quickly realised beyond my brief. Found Anton via a search of local electricians. He arrived as agreed that day and made my botched efforts safe for us before agreeing a return. We had a few things to juggle ourselves but he kept in touch throughout and arrived as agreed, did a sound job on replacing the lights. Great guy as well, I’ll have no hesitation in giving him a call in the near future to help with a project”
Bathroom spot lights, Checkatrade Customer
“Came in at a very competitive price and offered to start the job at a time convenient to me (in my case after 5pm). Great communication on the day to let me know he was available a bit earlier if required. Fitted several lights securely, neatly and safely and then even offered to take the old light fittings away to be disposed of correctly. Warm, friendly, polite chap would recommend and use again.”
